Andrews v. Andrews decision confirms the right of states to establish requirements for marriages and divorce.
January 19, 1903
By a 5-3 margin, the Supreme Court invalidates the divorce granted in South Dakota on May 6, 1892 to Charles Adams from Katherine Jackson, who had married in Boston on April 13, 1887 because Massachusetts law at the time forbade residents from obtaining a divorce in another state.
